Chandler schools health services: Many success stories

Posted

There are many reports that Chandler Unified’s health services team must create for various Arizona oversight agencies, one director says.

Christine Bromley, director of health services, touched on the immunization reports due each Nov. 15 as part of her presentation to the CUSD Governing Board in a Dec. 10 work session.

“Immunization state reports are due every Nov. 15 on preschoolers, kindergartners and sixth-graders,” Bromley told the board. “Those are to comply with state law, which is that every student needs to either be immunized or have a (documented) exception on file.”

Bromley said the district’s health services team has many more critical duties beyond emergencies, vision and hearing screenings and statistical reporting. For example, there are state-mandated compliance requirements and shared district data on accident and medical reports, EMS calls, AED and other medical equipment compliance and student health conditions.

The director explained how grateful she and staff and parents are for recent partnering with the Lions Club to benefit from its vision screening and eyewear program.

Bromley took a few questions from the board as well. Board member Kurt Rohrs asked about a few increases year-to-year in statistics, including visits to school nurses among elementary students.

“It’s really hard to rationalize health,” Bromley said. “It can be due to seasonal allergies, changes in the weather or activities. Having more wet weather lately, there’s more pollen in the air. We’ve seen an increase in asthma cases, respiratory cases. But sometimes, there’s no rhyme nor reason for an increase or decrease in office visits, illness occurrences or types of incidents or accidents.”
