Awarding a more than $300,000 contract for drainage and Americans with Disabilities Act crossing improvements at Superstition Shadows Park was approved at a recent meeting of the Apache Junction City Council.
The council on Oct. 1 voted unanimously to approve a $307,461 contract with Scholz Contracting LLC.
The work includes two walkways across a drainage channel in the middle of the park, 1091 W. Southern Ave. in Apache Junction.
“Over years it has just not worked out because every time it rains it comes right across the sidewalk, mud all over,” Parks Superintendent David Butler said during a Sept. 16 council work session.
“And when it was originally built, ADA standards were different than they are today, and both of those areas do not meet current ADA standards based on the grade of the landscape surrounding them and the slope of the sidewalk,” he said.
The city was awarded a $50,000 Land Water Conservation Fund grant for improvements at the park, which includes creating more sidewalk connectivity for ADA access, Butler said.
Money is also to come from the city’s general fund, according to a memo to the council from Parks and Recreation Director Liz Langenbach.
Scholz Contracting was the lowest qualified bidder out of three bids received, Butler told the council.
“Scholz was the contractor for the dog park and we have great experience working with them,” he said.
As it is a grant-funded project, all work must be completed prior to Dec. 31, 2024, according to a scope of work for construction services in the council packet.
