Aldi wants to bring multifamily housing to project

Posted

Gilbert Town Council will consider a proposal that would make way for a multifamily residential development next to an incoming Aldi grocery store near Baseline and Country Club roads.

The proposal, which will go before council Tuesday, received a recommendation for approval Dec. 7 from the Gilbert Planning Commission and has the backing of staff.

Aldi US, the American branch of a German discount grocer is requesting to change the general plan land use classification on approximately 5.51 acres of the 10-acre site from general commercial a high-density residential land use classification.

It also wants to rezone the 10 acres from general commercial zoning district with a planned area development overlay to 4.5 acres of general commercial and 5.51 acres of multifamily high zoning district.

That would then make way for the construction of the future Aldi grocery store on the western part of the property and a high-density multi-family apartment complex at the southeast corner of Arizona Avenue and Desert Lane. The proposed request will remove the site from the existing Fiesta Tech PAD.

The site consists of an abandoned vehicle sales parking lot on a large portion of the site, which will be removed to accommodate the grocery store and multifamily housing, according to town documents.

This would be the second Aldi in Gilbert after the first opened in February 2021 at 1801 E. Pecos Road, Gilbert. Aldi specializes in exclusively produced, custom-branded products at low prices offered in small, no-frills stores.
