Man pursued by Chandler police in Tempe died from self-inflicted gunshot: Mesa PD

Posted

A 40-year-old man has been identified as the person who died Friday night in Tempe as Chandler police officers attempted to arrest him as a suspect in an aggravated assault incident that occurred in their city.

Chandler detectives were in Tempe on Friday with probable cause to arrest the suspect, Christoffer Vink, in the assault that occurred two weeks earlier, police said.

Just before 8 p.m. July 17, the suspect fled as officers attempted the arrest.

The man ran into an apartment complex in the 800 block of McKellips Road and displayed a gun, according to a Chandler Police Department release over the weekend. A shooting occurred.

Mesa police investigating the case said Monday that the  Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner determined that the suspect, Vink, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers rendered medical aid, but firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene.

The officer-involved incident is being investigated by the Mesa Police Department under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team protocol.
