$250K for roundabout sculpture 'an irresponsible misuse of public funds'

OPINION — Spending $250,000 on a roundabout art installation (“City to consider $250K roundabout art agreement” on the cover of the November 2026 edition of the Apache Junction/Gold Canyon Independent) is an irresponsible misuse of public funds. A local muralist could easily create a vibrant, high-quality painting for 10% or less of that budget, achieving the goal of public beautification without the exorbitant price tag.

More importantly, the timing of this expenditure demonstrates a complete failure of local priorities. Spending a quarter of a million dollars on roadside decorations while our community's food bank is simultaneously being forced out of its home near Idaho Road and Superstition Boulevard is deeply troubling.
