The Surprise Economic Development Department hosted an American Business Women’s Day event in Surprise last week, dedicated to recognizing the significant contributions and achievement of women in the business community.

The event at Arts HQ Gallery, 16126 N. Civic Center Plaza, honored outstanding women in business and the broader Surprise community in celebration of National American Business Women’s Day on Sept. 22.

Among those who spoke at the event were Mayor Skip Hall, Surprise Economic Development Director Jeanine Jerkovic, West Valley Arts Council Executive Director Kathy Knecht, as well as keynote speaker Amber Cordoba, senior director of external affairs with Prestamos CDFI.

Prestamos CDFI is a community development financial institution that supports underserved communities through lending and business services.

Cordoba’s expertise and journey helped motivate and empower the attendees, as she shared insights on how preparation positions us for both unexpected opportunities and those we actively pursue.

Councilmember Aly Cline was also in attendance to show her support and recognition for the achievements of women in business.

In Honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Hall presented a proclamation, highlighting the enduring influence of Hispanic culture in people’s daily lives.

The proclamation was received by Patricia Duarte, executive vice president of Chicanos Por La Causa, along with Emilio Gaynor, director of international development at Chicanos Por La Causa, and keynote speaker Amber Cordova, senior director of external affairs at Prestamos CDFI.

In celebration of National Bakery Day on Sept. 20, the event came catered with a continental breakfast provided by the local bakeries Valley Keto, My Daddy’s Italian Bakery & Café, The Boyer Bakery and La Panaderia El Buen Gusto.
