“Interpretations IX: Art and Music Through a Humanities Lens” is an innovative and multidisciplinary program that explores connections between visual art, music and the humanities.
WHAM (What’s Happen’n Art Movement), 16560 N. Dysart Road, will host the discussion at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9.
The event will take place in conjunction with the Interpretations IX artist reception, sponsored by the Arizona Art Alliance. The Central Arizona Flute Ensemble will provide live music that relates to four fine works of art in the AzAA Interpretations IX exhibition.
The audience will experience and discuss the juxtaposition of paintings with the live music. Exhibiting artists will offer insights about their techniques and inspiration.
The program, facilitated by two leading humanities professors, will build meaning, create dialogue, and offer commentary about how artists and composers express their ideas, and how audiences process them.
“Artists know that the very, very personal is universal,” said Janice Jarrett, music specialist. “The arts invite us to participate, to interact, but we don’t always have opportunities that foster this interaction. The process of engagement can be made more possible by dialogue.”
“I look forward to discussing the relationship between visual art and sound, and how images and music are perceived differently,” said Dr. Julie Codell, art specialist. “There is a rich historic and cultural context for us to explore.”
“Music and art have a lot in common,” CAFE President Leslie Etzel said. “We will explore connection points such as subject, mood, style, motion, repetition and storytelling.”
This event is a collaboration among three nonprofit art organizations: Central Arizona Flute Ensemble, Arizona Art Alliance and WHAM Community Art Center.
The program was made possible by a grant from Arizona Humanities.
