Anybody who has ever wanted to help somebody with their taxes is now getting the perfect opportunity to do so.
The City of Surprise is looking for volunteers to provide free tax return preparation for low- to moderate-income individuals and families through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
The best part is no tax preparation experience is needed.
Training is available for the following positions:
· Tax preparer – Prepares basic 1040 tax returns and related schedules. Individual will also be able to answer tax law questions.
· Greeter/screener – Greets taxpayers to create a welcoming atmosphere and performs the screening process of all taxpayers prior to moving them to the tax preparer.
· Tax return closer – After tax returns are reviewed, the closer meets with taxpayers to finish the process of printing and having the returns signed.
· Interpreter – Provides bilingual assistance for Spanish speaking clients seeking tax preparation services.
IRS certification and tax law training classes will be held from late November through January throughout the West Valley, including at the Surprise Resource Center, 12425 W. Bell Road, Building A, #124; and Riverboat Bingo, 18300 W. Bell Road.
The Resource Center is hosting classes from 4 to 8 p.m. each Monday and Tuesday from Jan. 27 through April 14. It also has a Thursday morning class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that runs from Jan. 30 through April 9.
Riverboat Bingo, meanwhile, will host a class from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 22 through April 15.
Courses are typically total about 24 hours. Students will take a certification test online in the last class.
Those who volunteer, however, should expect a minimum of 25 hours a week of work from late January through the April 15 tax filing deadline.
