Surprise Vets Day parade canceled

City wants patriotic video, sign submissions instead

Posted

The COVID-19 pandemic has officially knocked out the annual Veteran’s Day parade in Surprise.

But the city’s Parks and Recreation Department is looking for tribute signs and videos to simulate the gratitude that parade-goers would have normally shown in person.

The video tribute will be a compilation of community messages to veterans that will be featured on Veterans Day on the Surprise TV cable channel, the Parks and Recreation social media pages (Facebook and Instagram), and the city’s website at surpriseaz.gov.

To participate, record a video tribute no longer than 15 seconds thanking veterans. Upload the video to surpriseaz.gov/veteranvideo by 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.

The city is encouraging entries from clubs, organizations and residents who want to show their patriotic spirit and honor those who have served the country.

In addition to the video tribute, the Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the community to pick up a coroplast sign to decorate in honor of veterans.

The signs will be displayed on Bullard Avenue near Surprise Stadium on Tuesday, Nov. 10 through 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

Blank signs will be available for pick up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12 through Friday, Oct. 30 at the Parks and Recreation Office, 15960 N Bullard Ave. Decorated signs must be dropped off at the Parks and Recreation Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6.

City officials are asking for no political messages in any of the videos or signs.
