He was a Grammy award winner and then-President Bill Clinton bestowed the Presidential Medal of Honor for his contribution to arts and culture in the U.S.

Surprise speaker series to highlight Chicano Music legend

Sculptor, muralist, storyteller and performance artist Zarco Guerrero will discuss Arizona legend Lalo Guerrero at the next Surprise’s speaker series event.

Lalo Guerrero, a Mexican American singer-songwriter from Tucson, is considered the Godfather of Chicano Music.

He was a Grammy award winner and then-President Bill Clinton bestowed the Presidential Medal of Honor for his contribution to arts and culture in the U.S.

The free speaker series event will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Surprise City Hall Council Chambers, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza.

Arizona-born Zarco Guerrero has helped develop Latino arts statewide. His art has been exhibited in Mexico and throughout the U.S.

He has received awards, such as a National Endowment for the Arts Japan Fellowship, a Governor’s Arts Award, a Zony Award, and he became the Southwest Folklife Alliance Master Artist.

He has also been awarded grants for artistic projects by The Doris Duke Foundation, Valley Metro and Arizona Community Foundation.
