Surprise soccer team still reaching for Stars

USL2 squad finishes second season with 4-4-4 record

Kenny Laird could not pass up the chance to go to this summer’s World Cup when one of the former soccer players he coached hooked him up with tickets to a match between Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“It’s hard to describe to people what a World Cup match in person is like,” said Laird, the coach and owner of the Stars FC club, which plays home matches in Surprise. “It’s like being at a Super Bowl every night. And the crowd with the singing and the drums and all that, that’s very real. It’s almost deafening.”

Laird is hoping his Stars FC can one day draw up a passionate fan base in Surprise as well now that the second season of games at OUAZ has wrapped up and preparations are already in place for Year 3.
