Surprise cancels July 4th fireworks again

COVID-19 conditions force 'difficult decision'

Posted

The city of Surprise has canceled its July 4th fireworks show for the second and final time.

In a news release, city officials said they made the "difficult decision" to cancel the fireworks because of the escalating COVID-19 situation in Surprise and Arizona.

Surprise had 821 positive COVID-19 cases through June 30, including Mayor Skip Hall and City Councilman David Sanders.

The city originally canceled its July 4th Celebration in April when COVID cases first began rising dramatically across the country.

Last month, the city announced plans for a modified celebration that would include a 20-minute fireworks show that residents could watch from their cars or homes.
