Surprise braces for DEI changes at state level

Voters could decide in 2026 whether to get rid of measures

Arizona voters may soon decide if they want to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion measures in schools and jobs across the state.

Officials from public institutions, including the city of Surprise and the Dysart Unified School District, said they would make changes to their policies to comply with the proposed legislation if it passes.

House Speaker Rep. Steve Montenegro, R-Litchfield Park, who sponsored the resolution, said it guarantees individuals are judged solely based on merit.
