A fully volunteer-run Surprise nonprofit was rewarded for its work in engaging the community in environmental work.

Farm Angels Sanctuary recently won the 2025 Anthem Gold Award in Sustainability, Environment & Climate: Local Community Engagement at the fifth annual Anthem Awards in New York City.

Surprise resident Lisa Buccigrosse, who founded the sanctuary to rescue hundreds of farm animals from neglect or abandonment, called it humbling to receive the Anthem Award, which recognizes purpose-driven individuals, companies and organizations worldwide.

“Every rescued animal, every volunteer hour and every visitor reflects the power of community and compassion,” Buccigrosse said. “In Arizona, it’s rare for a nonprofit with no employees to achieve recognition on a global stage, and this award shows what’s possible when people come together for a common purpose.”

Farm Angels Sanctuary, 14021 N. 180th Ave., earned the top honor for making what was described as a compassionate, mission-driven impact.

“By keeping animals off your plate, you are not only saving lives, you are contributing to a kinder, more sustainable world,” Buccigrosse said.

Farm Angels Sanctuary is now home to more than 100 residents, including pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, horses, cows, turkeys, llamas, alpacas, emus and tortoises.

The sanctuary uses volunteers to provide every aspect of care, education and wellbeing.

Farm Angels Sanctuary was picked for the Anthem Award this year from more than 2,000 nominations across 42 countries.

It joined a distinguished group of recipients, which include Sabrina Carpenter x PLUS 1, Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty, World Central Kitchen and the Mel Robbins Podcast.

As a nonprofit, the sanctuary relies entirely on donations and community support to provide lifelong care for its residents, sustain volunteer programs, and continue educational and rescue initiatives.
