Spots available for hazardous waste pickup

City to do home removals Oct. 5-16

Surprise residents have a couple of weeks to schedule appointments for home pickup of hazardous waste.

The city is taking appointments through Friday, Oct. 2, for pickups between Monday, Oct. 5, and Friday, Oct. 16.

Acceptable household hazardous waste items include:

  • Antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, diesel and fuel additives (five gallon limit per household).
  • Brake-transmission-power steering fluid, degreasers (five gallon limit per household).
  • Car and household batteries.
  • Pool chemicals, fire extinguishers and gas cylinders.
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Stain, varnish, turpentine, cleaners, adhesives.
  • Oil-based paint, paint thinners, solvents, cleaners, adhesives (10 gallon limit per household).
  • Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other lawn chemicals.
  • TVs, electronics, cell phones, computers, stereos.

Residents are asked to place the items on the driveway and up against the garage by 6 a.m. on the scheduled collection date. No hazardous waste is to be placed on sidewalks or curbside.

City staff will pick up the items between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the scheduled collection date.

Items that won’t be accepted include regular refuse and bulk trash, medical and commercial waste, ammunition or explosives, RV refrigerators that contain ammonia, radioactive material and tires.

Households north of Bell Road will have items picked up the Oct. 5-9, while those south of Bell will make appointments for Oct. 12-16.
