Michael Nelson Honored as 2026 Fast Casual Top 100 Movers & Shakers

Proud Arizona business owner Michael Nelson has been named among the Top 100 Movers & Shakers in the United States by Fast Casual, accepting the honor on behalf of his brand, Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shops. In its 20th year, the Top 100 recognizes the top 75 brands as well as 25 executives leading the fast casual restaurant industry, recognizing growth and sales accomplishments and honoring menu trendsetters as well as brands incorporating technology to enhance the customer experience. Nelson and Mr. Pickle’s came in at No. 65, its highest-ever ranking to date.

“Since 1995, Mr. Pickle’s has been a premier sandwich shop specializing in innovative and craveworthy sandwiches and catering. During its first three decades, thanks to its community culture, incredible recipes, and loyal fan base, the brand grew from one Northern California location to more than 50 shops throughout the state,” said Nelson. “I purchased the brand in 2023 with an eye to expand into Arizona and beyond, swiftly opening locations across Maricopa County in Scottsdale, Peoria, Ahwatukee, Surprise, Chandler, Queen Creek and Laveen to date while also positioning the concept for national growth.”

According to Nelson, rather than pursuing rapid expansion at all costs, he and the team have prioritized sustainable momentum by empowering franchise operators as long-term brand stewards and focusing on quality, consistency and guest experience.

“This recognition follows 18 months of purposeful innovation for us,” said Nelson. “Most notably, we recently introduced ‘The Sammie,’ a new sandwich size designed to meet evolving consumer preferences while encouraging guest frequency, alongside an expanded menu featuring rotating signatures and a quietly beloved not-so-secret menu.”

This is not Nelson’s sole honor in recent years. He and the team have also been ranked No. 31 on Restaurant Business’s Future 50 list, recognizing the fastest-growing emerging restaurant concepts in the nation.
