Barro's Pizza in Surprise part of holiday hunger fight

For the 14th year in a row, Barro’s Pizza proves that the only thing better than a hot slice is helping feed Arizona’s families.

On Tuesday, all Barro’s Pizza locations, including two in Surprise, will donate 100% of the day’s proceeds from dine-in, carry-out and delivery to St. Mary’s Food Bank.

By ordering one pizza, Barro’s patrons will help St. Mary’s Food Bank provide 70 meals, according to a news release. Even one fountain drink can provide 13 meals for those experiencing food insecurity.

Surprise has Barro's locations at 15403 W. Greenway Road and 16350 N. Pat Tillman Boulevard.

Last year’s Holiday Hunger Fight raised more than $419,900 — or 2.1 million meals for those in need.

The Doran Barro Holiday Hunger Fight remains St. Mary’s No. 1 fundraiser of the year, according to a news release.

“Giving back to the community is incredibly important to us, especially during the holidays when so many of our neighbors need it most,” said Bruce Barro, co-owner of Barro’s Pizza. “We believe feeding people is an act of love, and we’re so proud to continue this day of giving back to the community and supporting our friends at St. Mary’s.”

St. Mary’s Food Bank relies heavily on community partners. The funds raised through this annual campaign have a significant impact on the nonprofit’s ability to provide meals for those in need during the holiday season and beyond.

Over the course of the program’s existence, Barro’s Pizza has raised $3.25 million, equivalent to more than 16 million meals.

“We are deeply thankful for Barro’s unwavering support,” said Milt Liu, president and chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Food Bank. “Their commitment to fighting hunger is truly remarkable. The proceeds from this effort will have a meaningful impact, providing vital assistance to many individuals and families in need.”

Barro’s Pizza has been a staple in the Arizona community for over 40 years. The Holiday Hunger Fight honors the matriarch of the Barro family, Doran Barro, who the family lost in 2016.

The issue of hunger in Arizona and around the world was very important to Doran so she took on this effort with the support of her family and friends and most importantly, with the support of Barro’s loyal customers who participate each year. The Barro family chose to continue this fundraiser in her honor.

For nearly 1 million people in Arizona – including 1 in 5 Arizona children – food insecurity is an ongoing challenge.
