Zane Karlton King

Zane Karlton King, Retired Colonel, US Army, of Sun City West passed away on June 6, 2018, the 74th anniversary of D-Day - a day when he stormed Omaha beach as an 18 year old medic.Zane was born in Kirwin, Kansas to Estelle "Betty" Wiley and Ralph King on August 7, 1925. He resided primarily in Phillipsburg, Kansas until age 17 when he joined the army.Zane's two extraordinary wives, Maxine Laverne (Chance) King and Catherine Shirley-King, preceded him in death. Zane is survived by his daughter, Kathryn King of Baltimore, MD and his son, Dennis King of Phoenix, AZ; his half-sister, Sally Vogel and her husband, Dr. Robert Vogel and their two children and four grandchildren; four McMurdy step-sons: William, Thomas, David and John and their nine children and one great-granddaughter; and step-daughters Anita and Linda.Zane served in the US Army for over 28 years, five of which included the foreign conflicts of World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. He was a hospital administrator for army hospitals, including those at the West Point Military Academy in NY, Madigan in Ft. Lewis, WA, and Walter Reed in MD from which he retired in 1971. He attended the Baylor University program in Texas for Hospital Administration. Of his eight medals, three recognized his performance of outstanding service and achievements: Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.Zane, Maxine and their two children traveled extensively throughout the United States and through Europe during his station in Chinon, France. Zane and Maxine moved to the Phoenix, AZ area in 1971 where they enjoyed their retirement until her death in 1989. After Zane married Catherine, they moved to Sun City West in 1991. In between travels with Cathy to several countries on six continents and enjoying several cruises, Zane actively volunteered with The Prides and for Del Webb hospital and the Valley View Food Bank, as well as explored his creative side with friends at the Leather Club. In his later years, Zane enjoyed companionship and the arts, especially water color painting, at Lucy Anne's Place in Surprise, AZ, and was compassionately assisted by aides Melissa Nahill and Elizabeth Gentry in his home. He resided briefly before his death at A Loving Heart group home where he was competently cared for with assistance from Solace Hospice. Zane had a rich life and inspired family, friends and acquaintances with his intelligence, sense of humor, and zest for life. He will be greatly missed by all.Visitation, funeral services and lunch were held Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center, Sun City West, AZ and an Honor Military Funeral was performed at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at Cave Creek.Pall Bearers: Dennis King, son; Robert Vogel, brother-in-law; Kathryn King, daughter; Sally Vogel, sister; Dave McMurdy, step-son; and Tom McMurdy, stepson.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a charitable donation to a homeless men &/or women's veterans organization or program of your choice.
