Yaquinto: Criticism of Mayes is misplaced

Posted

In his recent opinion printed in the Chandler Independent, Andrew Petrie takes issue with Attorney General Kris Mayes’ focus on the proposed merger between Kroger and Albertsons, the largest grocery chains in Arizona.

He accuses Mayes of “political gamesmanship” while ignoring other important issues facing veterans. Having previously served on a Veterans Task Force while state budget director, I learned about the many economic difficulties facing veterans returning from service.

However, Mr. Petrie’s criticism of Ms. Mayes is misplaced.

First, the Attorney General is responsible for investigating corporate mergers and acquisitions that could potentially harm competition and consumers under Antitrust Laws. The Attorney General’s Office is active in many such multi-state investigations with other state Attorney Generals across the country.

As Attorney General, Ms. Mayes does not have power to increase veteran benefits such as disability compensation. That power is left to Congress and the Arizona Legislature. I am happy to join with Mr. Petrie in any efforts to urge Representative Andy Biggs to work to improve veterans’ benefits.
