Work suddenly stops on Surprise ICE detention facility

DHS inexplicably issues stop work order on controversial project

Work on the Surprise ICE detention facility has abruptly stopped — but officials have not said why.

According to USAspending.gov, the Department of Homeland Security issued a stop work order at the processing and detention center on April 22 and another on April 23.

The agency had contracted with GardaWorld Federal Services for $313 million on March 6 to transform the vacant 418,000-square-foot warehouse at 13290 W. Sweetwater Ave. into one that could use hundreds of immigrant detainees at one time.
