‘Wonderful Life’s’ James Stewart once helped bring military training site to Glendale

Christmas classic icon behind financing for Thunderbird Field No. 1

The Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” came out 74 years ago this week on Dec. 20, 1946, and even a couple generations later, it will still be part of the celebrations when families gather together to watch.

James Stewart’s performance of the iconic lead role, George Bailey, earned the Hollywood legend one of the motion picture’s six Academy Award nominations that year.

Just four years earlier, Mr. Stewart was helping get a former U.S. Army Air Forces training airfield established in Glendale.
