Woman dies in West Phoenix crash

A 44-year-old woman died early Sunday morning when she was hit by an SUV while crossing at 51st and Campbell avenues, police said.

The crash occurred about 1:20 a.m. Feb. 23, and detectives learned that Rafaela Montes-Garcia, 44, was attempting to walk across 51st Avenue, “just outside of the marked cross walk,” when she was hit by the SUV, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

The woman driving the SUV stayed at the scene and spoke to authorities, police said, adding other details are part of an investigation.
