Woman, 23, dies in multiple-vehicle Mesa collision, school bus involved

Mesa police have identified the woman who died Wednesday afternoon in an  crash at Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive.

Karen Maldonado, 23, was killed when her vehicle was rear-ended about 1 p.m. Aug. 23 as she was stopped for a red light at Stapley, authorities said.

An investigation showed that a vehicle was speeding in the curb lane near 1000 E. Southern Ave. when it hit a curb as it headed eastbound. It sideswiped another vehicle before hitting the victim’s car, and both vehicles headed into the intersection.

Mesa police have identified the woman who died Wednesday afternoon in an  crash at Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive.

Karen Maldonado, 23, was killed when her vehicle was rear-ended about 1 p.m. Aug. 23 as she was stopped for a red light at Stapley, authorities said.

An investigation showed that a vehicle was speeding in the curb lane near 1000 E. Southern Ave. when it hit a curb as it headed eastbound. It sideswiped another vehicle before hitting the victim’s car, and both vehicles headed into the intersection.

Several other vehicles were hit, including a school bus. One child was on the bus, but police said he was not injured.

The driver of the vehicle that began the collision was taken to Banner Desert Hospital for back pain where it was discovered later that he had possible kidney failure during the crash, police said, adding he was not impaired.

No other injuries were reported.
