As Gilbert prepares to exit a monthslong pause on utility shutoffs, thousands of residents and businesses behind on their bills could soon face late fees and potential service disconnections — though town officials say they will first offer pathways to get caught up.
The shift comes as the town nears completion of its third-party water meter audit by Kimley-Horn, after which normal billing enforcement will resume.
About 4,500 utility accounts are more than 45 days past due, including 88 commercial accounts, according to the town. In total, customers owe nearly $3.41 million across water, wastewater, refuse, environmental compliance and alarm fees.
