With looming budget deficits, Phoenix needs $227M more for trash collection

The city of Phoenix will need to spend $227 million more during the next several years to continue to be able to collect residents’ garbage, Public Works officials told a subcommittee last week.

That comes as the city is facing deficits in each of the next two fiscal years, and it could portend to higher fees for residents for trash collection.

Councilmember Debra Stark, chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure and Planning Subcommittee, said she appreciated the economic forecast “so we understand what might be on the horizon.”
