Add first state title appearance to Willow Canyon softball's season of firsts in 2021 - along with first No. 1 seed and first state semifinal.
In Thursday afternoon's 5A playoff semifinal the Wildcats used a three-run burst in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie with #4 Queen Creek Casteel. Sophomore pitcher Marissa McCann finished the 5-2 victory with her 13th strikeout of the night.
"Marissa is something else. The team has so much confidence in her. When we put her in the circle we know we're going to get a very good outing. We know we're going to be in the game. I think she's the best pitcher in 5A. Her numbers don't look as dominant because we didn't pitch her in the region," Willow Canyon coach Donnie Tizzano "Casteel is very well coached."
