TEMPE - Throughout the 5A softball playoffs, Desert Mountain relied on freshman wunderkind pitcher Lilly Goodwin while struggling to give her run support.
The Wolves had only 10 runs in four playoff wins leading into Monday's 5A softball final at Farrington Stadium on the ASU campus. They added two more on a fourth-inning home run against Willow Canyon senior ace Marissa McCann .
As it turned out, though, the two seventh inning insurance runs on a bloop, a blistering double by Goodwin and a bunt were necessary. They canceled out junior Rylee Turlington's solo homer and secured the 4-2 for #2 seed Desert Mountain (28-4) over #1 Willow Canyon (30-2-1).
