William W. Stopper, 89Sun City West resident William W. Stopper died Oct. 3, 2007.Mr. Stopper was born April 21, 1918, in Toronto, Canada. He grew up in Glenside and Williamsport, Penn.A Penn State University graduate, he played center for the basketball team for three years. He was also a graduate of Cornell University.He married Jean Lyman and, shortly thereafter, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was captain of an LCT craft in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.After the war he taught at Alfred State College. He retired in 1975 as dean of the College of Agriculture. He was active in the Alfred community, serving on the village board, as a justice of the peace, camping and canoeing with the Boy Scouts and as a charter member of the Lions Club.Mr. Stopper loved fly fishing, hunting, bridge, poker and raising beef cows.He is suvived by his wife, Ann; a daughter, Nancy Hammack of Cortez, Colo.,; a son, John Stopper of Harper, Kan.; a granddaughter, Lauren Hammack; and two grandsons, Jason and Justin Stopper.
