Wildfire real danger in SCW

AFMA shares tips with residents

The threat of wildfire is closer to Sun City West than many people think.

Sun City West is bordered on the east side by a large river bottom and according to Steve Ruehs, Arizona Fire & Medical Authority fire captain and wildland program manager, the river bottom is filled with some large trees and bushes, which serves as fuel, and burns every year.

“This not only puts out a lot of smoke, which is hazardous, but on a windy day can create flying embers, which can sometimes fly miles ahead of the fire creating spot fires.” Ruehs said.
