Wildcats clobber Sun Devils 12-3 to start off Pac-12 tournament

Posted

Arizona trounced Arizona State 12-3 in the first game of the Pac-12 tournament at Scottsdale Stadium Tuesday morning.

Both teams will need a win against 10th in the nation Oregon State. An Arizona win over the Beavers would put the Wildcats through into the semifinals. ASU would have to beat Oregon State and get a lot of help elsewhere in the tournament to advance.

Arizona faces Oregon State tomorrow, and ASU plays them Thursday. Both games start at 10 a.m. at Scottsdale Stadium, aired on Pac-12 Network.

The Wildcats got on the board early with four runs in the first inning Tuesday. By the fourth inning, they had a 9-0 lead over the Sun Devils. Aiden May allowed one run over six innings to earn the win for Arizona. Josh Hansell was the losing pitcher for ASU.

Nik McClaughry and Garen Caulfield each hit home runs for the Wildcats. McClaughry and Chase Davis each had three RBIs. Jonny Weaver had the biggest hit for the Sun Devils, a two-RBI double in the seventh.

The tournament, in its second year, is using pool play for the first time. The winner of each of the three-team pools will advance to the semifinals as well as one wild card. Any tiebreakers go to the higher seeded team.

The Wildcats, who are the 8-seed out of nine teams in the tournament, are at a disadvantage because the tournament favors higher seeds. Arizona must have a 2-0 record to win Pool B, which includes Arizona, Arizona State and 2-seed Oregon State. It would lose a tiebreaker for the wild card.

ASU, the 5-seed, still can earn the wild card with a 1-1 record under the right circumstances. The main obstacle is Pool C where either of 3-seed Washington or 4-seed USC would beat ASU for the wild card if tied at 1-1. The Sun Devils need one of those teams to win their Pool and the other to go 0-2. ASU also needs top-seeded Stanford to either win Pool A or go 0-2.
