Why the SAVE Act must not become law

Sun City resident refutes opinion on who legislation will deter from voting

OPINION — Tom Slade’s May 13 letter about the SAVE Act speculates that millions of undocumented immigrants are mainly in blue states and that they will be able to vote in national elections.

In fact, the state with the second-highest number is red Texas, while the third-highest number is in red Florida. Mr. Slade should also be aware of  abundant data showing that it is rare for an undocumented immigrant even to try to vote in a national election and still rarer to do it successfully.

Some researchers have called it “vanishingly rare.” Such data are quite accessible online. Even the conservative Heritage Foundation and libertarian CATO Institute have weighed in; for example, find online the February 2026 article, Trump’s Claim About Non-Citizens Voting is False. We Can Prove It, from the CATO Institute.
