Why I support automated license plate readers

Goodyear councilman details how ALPR technology has saved lives, and what it does and doesn’t do

OPINION —  I ran for City Council in Goodyear on public safety and that is still my first duty: protect families, protect businesses and use proven tools with clear guardrails.

Here is what that looks like in real life. Just a few months ago, a toddler was abducted at knife point from a Target. An Amber Alert was issued and an Automatic License Plate Reader — ALPR — flagged the vehicle. Using real-time data, police officers converged on the suspect vehicle and safely recovered the 1-year-old child. That rescue happened right here in Arizona.

Another night, a Silver Alert went out for a missing senior who had left home without medicine. An ALPR picked up the car near a freeway on-ramp. Analysts passed the location to patrol and officers found the driver within minutes and took them home.
