Responding to Lisa Everett’s letter, Time to lower the temperature in politics: That’s a noble idea, but she fails to point the finger at the person I believe is most responsible for this climate: President Donald J. Trump.
Can she name one Democrat or Republican president who has said he hates his opponents? It appears the only goal in this second term is retribution against Trump’s perceived enemies. Lowering the cost of food, gasoline and other essentials no longer seems to be a priority.
My belief is that Lisa doesn’t care about the rhetoric, but rather wants to silence critics of the president. Trump himself proposed that criticism of him should be illegal. That’s an absurd statement for anyone who believes in democracy, but it is completely understandable for someone who desires to be an authoritarian dictator.
Trump has launched attacks on newspapers, television networks and late-night entertainers who are critical of his policies. Jimmy Kimmel was the latest, but probably not the last.
Personally, I wish Trump administration policies would align with true Christian values. I’m sure Jesus wouldn’t approve of “Alligator Alcatraz” or sending people to a torturous prison in El Salvador. Since Jesus taught us to welcome and feed strangers, and to treat them as one of our own, I don’t believe he would approve of demonizing people who cross our borders.
I do not believe Jesus would approve of the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which transferred trillions of dollars from the poor and middle class to the wealthiest people on the planet. Nor would he likely approve of cutting nutrition programs for children and the elderly, or taking health care away from millions of Americans.
As a proud Trump supporter, maybe Lisa could enlighten me on how Trump’s policies reflect Christian values. I await her response.
