When the U.S. withdrew troops from Afghanistan in 2021, Arizona State Rep. Steve Kaiser worked with other government officials to get an Afghani translator whom Kaiser had worked with during his time in the Army out of the country safely.
Eventually, the translator and his family reached the U.S. and resettled in the Valley where Kaiser said he became the family’s de facto sponsor. He said it was difficult, even for him as an elected state official, to get answers about what resources were available for the refugee family.
“That’s when I realized the process is all over the place,” Kaiser said at an event earlier this month. “There’s city resources, state resources, there’s a million agencies and nonprofits.”
