OPINION — The start of a new year is often framed as a reset. A chance to do better, feel better and leave old habits behind. But for many people struggling with addiction it also can intensify stress, unresolved trauma and the urge to self-medicate.

I know this because I’ve lived it.

Years ago, my own substance use spiraled into a place I never imagined for myself. My decisions led to repeated encounters with law enforcement, fractured relationships and a loss of direction.
