As Arizona’s triple-digit temperatures rise, it's more important than ever to check in on the older adults in your life — whether it’s a neighbor, friend or family member. A quick visit can help ensure their safety and well-being.
Older adults are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses due to age-related changes in their ability to regulate body temperature and manage chronic health conditions. Unfortunately, many Arizonans who live alone or on fixed incomes may be especially vulnerable — not only to the physical dangers of heat but also to isolation that prevents them from reaching out for help.
At Home Assist Health, we’ve seen firsthand that many seniors are hesitant to speak up about their needs. They're often afraid it could mean losing their independence or being placed in a care facility. The good news is that aging in place is possible — and with the right support, many can continue living safely and comfortably in their own homes.
When to consider in-home support
Here are 10 signs that may indicate your loved one needs in-home care:
• The house is unusually warm — possibly due to an inoperable air conditioner
• Wearing clothing that’s too warm or inappropriate for hot weather
• Signs of dehydration or fatigue
• Poor hygiene or noticeable body odor
• Limited mobility, especially when it comes to staying cool or hydrated
• Increased forgetfulness or missed medications
• Isolation or signs of depression
• Noticeable weight changes or issues with eating
• Missed appointments or confusion about daily tasks
• Evidence of a recent fall or physical injury
If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to have a conversation about support options. Phone consultations and in-home assessments can help families understand care needs and eligibility — whether through Medicaid Long-Term Care, certain Medicare Advantage plans or private pay options.
Let’s work together to make early summer a season of prevention and care. A small check-in today could prevent a major emergency tomorrow.
