What should we do about coyotes in our neighborhood?
Area homeowners discuss strategies for keeping pets safe
We are fairly new to Arizona. This morning we had a coyote walking on our block wall. We have two small dogs to protect and are wondering if there is anything we may be able to install on the top of the wall that would prohibit coyotes ability to jump and or walk on the wall. — Catherine Ventrello-Hrey

Jumpy
Don’t open the doggy door and always pay attention to your dogs ... always when your dogs go to the patio, go with them and make sure before coyotes are not there. Coyotes can jump high! — Lyda Payne
___
Enclosed
You can get a smaller size dog run, good for smaller dogs ... Easy to put together (my teenage boys put ours together). It’s fully enclosed so they should be safe. — Linda Adams
___
Walled
No. Coyotes can scale anything. Even the rollers ... Instead, protect your dogs with any and all suggestions in this feed. I don’t even want my big dog out alone. I have a 6-foot block wall. — Taffy Baron

Prevalent
We installed a fenced dog run to protect our dog from coyotes when she uses her dog door when we are not home. The coyotes are more prevalent at night and mornings. They will attack small pets. — Steve Goucher
Spike
You can also buy a couple spiked collars or spiked harnesses. They always go for the neck and will bite the spike and let go. — Julie Legotti

Takeoff
Watch your dogs every time they are outside. A friend of mine had her dog killed by a coyote jumping the wall and grabbing it and taking off again. — Lorrie Cook-Mahalick

Indoor cat
Most of our neighbors who have small dogs have enclosed dog runs because it’s not just coyotes (who can jump over 12-foot walls) but also owls will swoop them up. Don’t let your cats out. Welcome to the desert. — Valerie Toulec

Lurking
It’s not just coyotes though. Owls and hawks as well. I go out back with my small dog because you just don’t know what’s lurking. — Deanna Burdett
