What’s behind those Deck Park Tunnel doors in downtown Phoenix

The celebrated Hance Park is above it, 10 lanes of I-10 traffic feeding a major downtown artery is outside it — what’s actually inside the Valley’s ‘hidden cavern’ is much lesser known

Safety is key when managing an engineering marvel like the Interstate 10 Deck Park Tunnel in downtown Phoenix.

Whether it’s keeping an eye on the 725-horsepower fans capable of reversing airflow to either intake or exhaust air, or if three times a year it’s cleaning the entire three-quarter-mile stretch featuring 10 lanes — five in each direction — serving as a major artery for the Phoenix area.

Other times, as it was on a recent Tuesday morning, it’s taking care when opening one of the four maintenance access doors along the tunnel’s wall. Drivers can’t help but notice them, whether during the slow crawl at rush hour or zipping through when traffic is moving fast, as it does to the tune of almost 250,000 vehicles that pass through daily.
