Valley gearing up for El Niño winter

El Niño is on its way for winter.

In general, El Niño events mean there is “warmer than average” sea surface temps across the tropical Pacific —south of Hawaii, said Mark O’Malley, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

Some El Niño events, which happen once every three to five years, bring rain. However, some El Niño years can be a dud in terms of how much rain it brings, O’Malley said.
