What are your thoughts on the proliferation of data centers coming to or proposed for Valley cities?

As heavy users of water and electricity, and creators of heat and noise, are data centers good corporate neighbors of desert communities? Do data centers actually employ people, or are they largely huge warehouses full of computers? Are there ways to mitigate the strain they place on water supplies, power grids and the environment to make them more suitable neighbors?
