West Valley stabbing leaves 1 dead, 1 in jail

A 37-year-old man has been arrested as the suspect in a stabbing death that occurred early Saturday morning, Phoenix police said.

Robert Alan Downs, 37, is in jail facing a murder charge in connection with the death of another man, who police have not identified.

Phoenix police detectives are investigating the case after officers were called about 12:35 a.m. June 8 to 27th Avenue and Indian School Road.

Details on the call indicated that both the victim and the suspect remained in the area, police stated in a release.

When officers arrived, they found Downs who matched the description of the suspect in the stabbing.  Downs was arrested without incident.

The victim had at least one stab wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives, according to the release, said Downs “provided a self-defense claim which did not match evidence found on scene,” and he was booked into jail for murder.

The victim's identity will be determined by the Office of the Medical Examiner, police said.
