West Valley Preps' Goodyear/Surprise golf preview

Posted

The high school boys and girls golf season began Aug. 15 at schools across the state.

West Valley Preps and the Surprise Independent and Goodyear/Litchfield Park Independent asked local high school coaches about their teams. Here are their responses.

Canyon View Jaguars

Boys coach: Marcus Lindsey (third year)
Region: Division II Section III
Who are your top returning golfers? We return three of our top five from last year in senior Landon Bailand, junior Kolton Frye and sophomore Caleb Troyer. We also return four others who competed in a match or tournament for us last season
Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? Junior Dane Carter is a newcomer for us this year and is competing in a competitive golf environment for the first time in his career so there will be some learning curves for him but the potential is there for him this season. We also have sophomore Collin Padget returning this year who competed in one match and one tournament as a Freshman last year.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Our depth. Any given night our 1-4 could score our best. In two matches this season our best score of the night came from our #4 and our #3. I'm comfortable putting any of Caleb Troyer, Kolton Frye, Landon Bailand or Dane Carter in our #1 spot. Also our depth 5-9 as well. At the 5 spot we have 5 or 6 guys that are competing for that spot weekly.
What are your highlights so far this season? And what are you looking forward to the rest of the year? An opening round of 39 to start the season from Kolton Frye and a team 169 in the first match. Landon Bailand also rebounded with a 40 in our second match of the year after he struggled the day before in the opener. Our iWR score from our first match matched our end of season ranking from last year. So to start off this season scoring where we ended last year is a sign of the potential our boys have this season. I am excited to see the growth of this team this season and make a run at the section championship and a possible state qualifier

Dysart Demons

Boys coach: Thomas Vesey (ninth year at Dysart, 42nd year overall)
Region: Division II Section III
Who are your top returning golfers? Senior Austin Henderson.
Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? I have several, including freshman Logan Slater and junior Marco Ortiz.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? They support each other and have fun with one another.
What are the primary goals for this year’s team? I have 12 golfers this year. I want to see improvement in how they play the game.

Millennium Tigers

Girls coach: Charles McMahon (first year)

Region: Division II Section III
Who are your top returning golfers? We do not have any returning girls.  We are a team of nine freshmen.
Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? All of our girls are making an impact this year, and helping us build a strong foundation for the future.  Grace Ashlock, Zuri Rop, Anna Bennett, Isabella Lopez, Natalie Stasch, Preceilla Mariscal, Quinn Michaud, Sterling Montez and Tatyana Zepeda.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Our team's best attribute is our enthusiasm.  They are all so excited to come to practice, get better, and play in matches.
What are your highlights so far this season? And what are you looking forward to the rest of the year? A highlight so far is our first match.  This was my first match as a coach, and all of my players' first match in their high school careers.

Shadow Ridge Stallions

Boys coach: Scott Lihs (ninth year at Shadow Ridge)
Region: Division I Southwest
Who are your top returning golfers? Junior Hogan Diver and Cooper Carl.
Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? Two freshmen Mason Ostermyer and Cale Wasmund.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Very young and the program is growing. We have 19 players this year. Our association with Sterling Grove has been very beneficial for Shadow Ridge.
What are your highlights so far this season? And what are you looking forward to the rest of the year? Only one match in and the promise of my freshman is exciting. I’m hoping we have one or two players qualify for the state tournament at Aguila later this year.

Valley Vista Monsoon

Girls coach: Larissa Scott (first year)
Region: Division I Southwest/Yuma
Who are your top returning golfers? Senior Nicole Bowen has a scholarship to North Dakota.
Who are some newcomers that may have an impact this year? Freshmen Nissi Garcia is making a strong impact, as is sophomore Alyse Hryb.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Group dynamics, the team is really close and supportive one another. So far they are having fun and recruitment is high.
What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Highlights, just seeing the girls grow in golf from no knowledge to understanding more each day. They are getting the fundamentals down and starting to understand and help each other out on penalties and improving their game. I’m looking forward to seeing Nikki make state this year and for my other girls to make par at least once each this year.
