West Valley Mavericks golf tournament raises more than $300K for charity

The Maverick drew 344 golfers, 500 celebrants to Wigwam

Despite the uncertainties of planning a major event during the COVID-19 pandemic, the West Valley Mavericks Foundation pulled off its most successful Maverick Golf Tournament to date, drawing 344 golfers to the Wigwam resort in Litchfield Park and raising more than $300,000 for local charities, including Make-A-Wish Arizona.

Tournament Chairman Paul Willingham said his committee planned for coronavirus-related contingencies, but in the end the foundation was able to hold its eighth annual tournament as a full in-person event.

“Our initial meetings with the Wigwam staff and community officials were not very encouraging based on local and state regulations, and it appeared that we would not be able to put on our full event like we had to do in 2020,” Willingham said. “But as time went on and planning progressed, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel and planned for full-scale production. It paid off in a great way.”
