West Valley city gearing up for celebrated Día de los Muertos

If you think Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is about death think again. This month’s annual festival in Avondale is about celebrating life – and the spirits who may even show up for the party.

A century-plus-old cemetery in the West Valley is the ideal family spot for one of the best celebrations of the season this month.

The annual Día de los Muertos Festival, sponsored by Ballet Folklorico Esperanza, returns to its home inside Goodyear Farms Historical Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 25. Free to all ages, the “Day of the Dead,” as it’s translated, brings dancers, musicians, vendors, food trucks, and of course at the heart of the festival, a community altar where residents are encouraged to bring photos or keepsakes of relatives who have passed on.
