West Valley Art Museum features African tribal art

Personal collection of Goodyear’s Robert Glenn on display

Ironically, the works currently on display at the West Valley Art Museum (WVAM) Art Gallery in Peoria aren’t actually art strictly speaking.

So says the owner of the works on loan for the exhibit titled “African Art in the Cycles of Life,” which celebrates Black History Month through Thursday, March 4. From the personal collection of Goodyear resident Robert Glenn, the exhibit features rare works that represent numerous tribes in many countries including Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria and Zaire, plus others.

To visitors to the WVAM Gallery, located on the first floor of Peoria City Hall, 8401 W. Monroe St., the works are indeed artistic wonders. Their origins, however, come from practical uses for tribal worship, rituals, magic and for communicating with the supernatural, Mr. Glenn explains.
