WeRide Surprise continues free rides in summer

Posted

The new WeRide Surprise microtransit program will provide more residents and visitors the opportunity to take advantage of the program by extending free rides for all riders through Aug. 31.

This summer, younger riders can use WeRide to get around places like the movie theater or shopping and entertainment venues like Prasada.

Starting Tuesday, May 30, and running through Sept. 1, the minimum age to ride will temporarily drop to 13 or older, allowing students and teens to take advantage.

WeRide Surprise provides on-demand shared rides within a set service zone and operates like popular, private, on-demand services. Trips can be booked through the WeRide app, available in the Apple App Store and Google Play, as well as by phone at 623-777-4330 or at surpriseaz.gov/WeRIDE.

Unlike traditional public transit stops, WeRide uses virtual pick-up and drop-off locations selected so riders in the service zone will only need to walk about 5-10 minutes or less to reach them. Virtual stops are located around neighborhoods at community mailboxes or parks, as well as shopping centers, medical facilities, recreational locations and community spaces.

The service pairs multiple passengers heading in the same direction in a single vehicle that fits up to five passengers.

Starting Sept. 1, the regular adult fare will be $2 per ride. Seniors age 60 or older, students with a school ID, veterans and persons with a disability pay a reduced fare of $1 per ride.

Children 5 years old and under ride are free with a fare-paying passenger 16-years-old or older. Fares can be paid using the app with a credit/debit card or paid to the driver with exact cash, as no change can be given by the drivers.

This service is open to anyone needing to take a trip within the identified ride zone and is offered in addition to Paratransit and RideChoice services already available through Valley Metro for qualified seniors and persons with a disability.
