Wentz: Vehicle tax credits must be fair to all Americans
It appears that the Build Back Better bill may be dead in its current form. This is good news on one front — the fact that a poorly thought-out tax credit for buying an electric vehicle, but only if it was built in a U.S. union plant — won’t go into law.
This tax credit only applies to a few vehicles built by the large auto manufacturers and excludes all the startup companies, like those located here in Arizona.

This would have decimated these innovative companies and put them at a terrible disadvantage in the market.
These startups are rattling the cages of the big guys and pushing innovation. A good example is the fact that Lucid Motors vehicle won the coveted Motor Trend Car of the Year — with only a few cars having come off of the assembly line.
This tax credit would most likely drive many of these out of business and drastically limit what vehicles we would be able to buy in the future. Congress needs to be encouraging the conversion to green vehicles, but should not be using the tax system to pick winners and losers. Any tax credits should apply fairly to all vehicles.
Only by fostering this competition are we sure to see the advances necessary to make electric vehicles commonplace and fit the diverse needs of consumers.
