Wendel: RCSC board violating meeting rules in Sun City

There was an item on the agenda for the Recreation Centers of Sun City Sept. 13 board meeting. This meeting was adjourned before any agenda items were addressed.

There was a third and final reading of Agenda Item 2 (Director Dan Schroeder to make motion). This was an important motion to change the RCSC bylaws to make the use of Robert’s Rules of Order optional! This is a blatant power grab. Director Rich Hoffer has often quoted Robert’s Rules of Order to control member comments to the board. Now the board wants to use RRO when it benefits them. RRO also protects members, not just the board of directors.

If the RCSC wanted to replace RRO with something else, I would entertain that option. But the single word change of “shall” to the word “may” is a blatant effort to tilt the scale to the board of directors.

We should all oppose this change. We should stand up and speak to this agenda item at the Sept. 30 board meeting. It is our last chance.

The dismissal of Karen McAdam from the board is tragic and has angered the community. Don’t let that anger get in the way of this significant attempt to grab more power. Robert’s Rules of Order should remain mandatory (shall) and not be made optional (may).

If this item is on the Sept. 30 agenda, I plan to comment on it and oppose it.

RCSC, violating, rules, Sun City
