Welcome to the cookout: Scottsdale’s Second Annual Juneteenth

The second annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration in Scottsdale was a big cookout complete with music, friends and families including the elders like Gwen and Ernie Calhoun.

The couple traveled to Scottsdale for the Father’s Day weekend and staked a “cool spot” to enjoy the festivities, enduring scorching heat and the sun beaming down on them at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park on June 19 to commemorate — June 19, 1865 — when the last enslaved people were informed of their freedom in the U.S.

“We decided this would be a nice way to spend the weekend,” said the former Sierra Vista City Councilwoman Calhoun, a native of Galveston, Texas, where Juneteenth began.
