Weekend travel in the East Valley poses challenges

Drivers who need to get into or out of the East Valley are facing some challenges today, and they will continue through Sunday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that two separate projects related to the Broadway Curve improvement project will cause issues along Interstate 10 and Broadway Road in Tempe.

There are ways to avoid and get around the construction, but they will require drivers taking extra care and time, according to ADOT.

Weekend travel in the East Valley poses challenges

Posted

Drivers who need to get into or out of the East Valley are facing some challenges today, and they will continue through Sunday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that two separate projects related to the Broadway Curve improvement project will cause issues along Interstate 10 and Broadway Road in Tempe.

There are ways to avoid and get around the construction, but they will require drivers taking extra care and time, according to ADOT.

Broadway Road will be closed this weekend between 48th and 52nd streets, and Eastbound I-10 will be closed between US 60 and Loop 202.

Both closures began 10 p.m. Friday and will be in place until 4 a.m. Monday, July 25, according to ADOT.

The work along I-10 is caused by crews shifting work zones into the median to prepare for installation of digital message boards.

That will result in the following ramps being closed and ADOT’s suggestions for detours:

  • The eastbound I-10 on-ramps between Broadway and Ray roads.
  • The westbound US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10.
  • The eastbound I-10 HOV ramp to eastbound US 60.
  • The westbound US 60 HOV ramp to westbound I-10.

To get beyond the closure, East Valley drivers should use eastbound Loop 202 or eastbound US 60 to southbound Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 to access I-10.

West Valley drivers who are heading to the East Valley can bypass the closure by using Loop 202. From I-10 and 59th Avenue, head south and then east on Loop 202 to connect with eastbound I-10 just south of Chandler Boulevard.

In Tempe, the Broadway Road work is necessary, according to ADOT, to realign the intersection of Broadway Road and 52nd Street as part of the Broadway Curve project.

The intersection is being shifted to the south so workers can make improvements to the north. Following this weekend’s work, drivers will use a temporary traffic signal at the intersection.

To help accomplish that, this weekend Broadway Road in Tempe will be closed in both directions between 48th and 52nd streets.

At the same time, the eastbound Interstate 10 connector ramp between 48th Street and Broadway Road and the westbound I-10 off-ramp at Broadway Road will be closed.

The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road will remain open. Drivers will not be able to access Broadway Road from 52nd Street and should use University Drive instead, ADOT officials said.

Detours

  • Westbound Broadway Road detour: Drivers on Broadway Road who need to access westbound Broadway Road should use northbound Priest Drive to westbound University Drive to southbound State Route 143 to access Broadway Road west of the closure.
  • Westbound I-10 to westbound Broadway Road detour: Drivers on westbound I-10 who need to access westbound Broadway Road should use westbound I-10 to southbound 40th Street to access Broadway Road west of the closure.
  • Eastbound Broadway Road detour: Drivers on eastbound Broadway Road and eastbound I-10 who need to access eastbound Broadway Road should use southbound 48th Street to eastbound Southern Avenue to northbound Priest Drive to access Broadway Road east of the closure.
  • Westbound I-10 to eastbound Broadway Road detour: Drivers on westbound I-10 who need to access eastbound Broadway Road should use northbound SR 143 to eastbound University Drive to southbound Priest Drive to access Broadway Road east of the closure.
